Chino, Rose – Bowl with Heartline Deer, Butterflies, and Two Openings (1970s)

$ 91.72

This is an unusual but creative bowl by Rose Chino Garcia. She was a daughter of noted potter Marie Z. Chino. This piece has a round body and two openings. The bowl has a medallion on each side, each with a Heartline deer.   They are painted in her classic Acoma style.  The heartline deer are symbolic in Acoma pottery.  It was a design borrowed from Zuni pottery around 1910 and the heartline is said to represent life itself.  Separating them are fineline-rain designs and interlocking butterflies.  It is a creative and fully designed bowl.  The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and the heartlines are a red clay slip. The bowl was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom, “Rose Chino”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
